How to Blog When You Don’t Have Much Time

blogging-time-management-clock-agendaWant to know the secret to running a successful blog? It’s publishing fresh, high-quality content on a regular basis. Content will drive both search engines and human visitors to your blog, boosting its search rankings in the process. But what happens if you work a full-time job or have other responsibilities that restrict your time allowance for blogging?

Schedule Posts in Advance

Even if you are unable to log into your blog every other day to publish a new post, you can still schedule posts in advance. Most of the major blogging platforms, including WordPress, have a built-in post scheduling feature. After creating your post, click the “Edit” button next to “Publish immediately” and choose your preferred publishing date. Using this feature will allow you to create several blog posts at once, scheduling them to be published at a later date.

Publish ‘Quick’ Content

Rather than writing essay-long posts for your blog each and every time, try diversifying your efforts with some faster, easier-to-create content. For instance, YouTube videos are an excellent choice, as it takes just minutes to grab the iFrame embed code and paste it into your blog. If you want to go one step further, you can create a short commentary for the video, adding your own perspective. Other ideas for quick blog content include visitor photo submissions, a frequently asked questions page, infographics, etc.

Stay Focused

It’s easy to get distracted when you blog. Perhaps you’re researching new topics and then venture on Facebook, at which point you spend the next half an hour updating your status and checking friends’ messages. While there’s nothing wrong with using Facebook or other social media networks for research purposes, you should stay focused on the task at hand: blogging. If you have a tendency to stray off on social media for long periods at a time, try using a time management app like StayFocused. It will place a time limit on sites like Facebook, automatically kicking you off once the limit has been reached. StayFocused is a simple yet beneficial app that’s sure to improve your blogging productivity.

Seek Guest Bloggers

Of course, another idea is to recruit guest bloggers to write and submit new posts for your blog. This involves finding reliable writers and having them create new posts in exchange for a link pointing back to their own website or social media profile. You will benefit from the free content for your blog, and the writer will benefit from increased exposure as well as a free backlink. It’s a win-win scenario for everyone involved. Just remember to double-check the writer’s work to ensure it’s relevant and high quality (you don’t want to publish low-quality, irrelevant articles on your blog).

Scheduling posts in advance is a great way to balance a busy workload and blogging. I usually write three or four posts on Sunday afternoon and get them lined up for the following week.
