The short answer to this question is yes, you can make money blogging. But it takes more than just throwing up a WordPress site and a couple of short articles to produce any sizable income. Blogging is highly competitive industry, with millions of active blogs currently online. If you want to succeed, you must differentiate yourself from the rest while providing something of real value to your readers.
So, how can you make money blogging? Dozens of different opportunities exist, one of which is writing blog posts for high-traffic blogs in exchange for a flat per-post fee. It’s not uncommon for blogs to hire writers to produce their content, paying them anywhere from $5 to $50 (sometimes even more) per post. You’ll still be able to tag your posts under your name in most cases, but you won’t have control of the post or blog once it’s published.
If you prefer to blog for yourself rather than someone else, you can make money through Google’s Adsense program. Not to be confused with Adwords, Adsense is a program which allows bloggers and webmasters to earn revenue by displaying ads. When a visitor clicks on one of these ads, you earn revenue — usually a percentage of how much the actual advertiser is paying Google. The secret to generating a sizable income through Adsense is to create your ads in a manner that entices visitors to click. It’s strictly against Google’s Terms of Service to ask or tell visitors to click your ads, but using the right colors and placement can boost your clicks.
Another monetization option for bloggers is affiliate marketing. Basically, this is the process of selling other companies’ products, goods and/or services in exchange for a commission. If you run a blog about dog training, for instance, you may want to sell leashes, collars, harnesses, clickers, crates and other canine accessories on your blog. You can find relevant affiliate programs simply by Googling “your niche + affiliate program.” And if you can’t find one, you can always sign up for Amazon’s affiliate program.
Of course, you can always use your blog to sell your own product or service. Whether it’s a physical product or a digital product, blogs are the perfect marketing platform. Just remember to match the product with your target demographic.
